History and culture

Genova, which is located between the sea and the mountains on the Ligurian coast, is the meeting point between northern Europe and the Mediterranean.
This central position has transformed the city into a natural place for exchanging different traditions and cultures.
In addition, the city has gained through the centuries a considerable historical and artistic reputation: in the period of the Maritime Republics, Genova was known as "the Superb" and now its pride and elegance is reflected in the beautiful architecture of the palaces and streets accessible through the so-called "Caruggi", the narrow alleys of the old town.
The city was designated "European Capital of Culture" in 2004 and, since July 2006, le Strade Nuove and Palazzi dei Rolli have become part of the list of the "UNESCO World Heritage".
The medieval old town, the largest in Europe, preserves the city's past. Most of the historic buildings date back to the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque period, a tangible evidence of a glorious history.
Its port is still the most important in Italy and one of the largest in the Mediterranean and Europe.
Nowadays well known as a tourist, scientific and university destination, the city remains also an important economic centre of the country.
Living Genova is also discovering its opposite souls: fishing villages near luxury resorts, prestigious villas and picturesque views of the hinterland that still maintain their ancient traditions.
Genova has many enviable characteristics and strong points that makes it unique as a congress destination: unique museums in terms of richness and beauty of the collections, a great tradition of theatre and music, major exhibitions, and major international events, such as the International Boat Show and the Exhibition Euroflora.
